Civic Engagement & Voting: What is Civic Engagement?

What's in this guide?

This guide will help introduce you to the idea of civic engagement, and it'll provide ways to get involved in your different communities, including here on campus, within Marist's local communities, and other communities. While voting isn't not the only form of civic engagement, it can be a powerful tool for change, so this guide also offers information on voting and learning about the different issues impacting communities of all sizes, locally and nationally.

What is Civic Engagement?

Civic engagement means forming skills, knowledge, values, and motivation to create positive change in your community, whether that be your immediate and local community or a larger community. It can involve a variety of tasks, including volunteering, protesting, lobbying, mutual aid, and voting. It can be political, but it doesn't have to be. There are many ways to get involved within your communities outside of political activities.
