Philosophy Subject Guide: Diversity in Philosophy

Introduction

Philosophy is typically considered a white, Western discipline, and, within academic spaces, it has been largely dominated by white, cis, able bodied white men. There are, however, a diverse group of people in the field who do not fit this traditional mode. Many of these people have been studying, writing on, and discussing these topics for centuries, outside academia. This page offers you a variety of resources to explore diverse ideas within the field of philosophy. It includes different theories to look into, reading lists, lists of philosophers, and more.

Search term ideas

The field of philosophy is vast, and you might find it hard to know what to search as you begin your research. Here are some ideas if you're looking to diversify your philosophy research.

  • Indigenous Philosophy/Indigenous Knowledge
  • Africana Philosophy
  • Philosophy of Race
  • Philosophy of Disability
  • Philosophy of Sexuality/Gender
  • Feminist Philosophy
  • Islamic Philosophy
  • Chinese Philosophy
  • Asian-American Philosophy
  • Indian Philosophy

Keep in mind, too, that many times philosophy overlaps with other fields, such as Sociology or Religious studies. For example, you might find information on Black Philosophy in a philosophy journal or book, but you might also find similar ideas in a text on race and society.
