Use the Occupational Outlook Handbook to research the field you are interested in and potential careers within it.
Here's a few tips on using this resource:
- Don't start with the specific position or career you are looking for
- Browse the "Occupation Groups" (see the list on the right) you are interested in and explore all the career options within it
- You may need to look at more than one group to find some careers
- For example, fashion is not broken out into a separate group in the handbook, think about what the job will be doing ex: design, buying, selling, etc, and look to see if there is a field for that.
- Ask for help
- Keep in mind that there isn't always a standard name for a job, so browse through looking at job descriptions and not job titles
- Keep an open mind as you search
- High salary does not always indicate a good job, think about the environment and responsibilities you will have when you pick that job
