Faculty Power Presenting Guide: Teaching Presentation Skills

Class Activities

Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24)

Time Required:  About 15-20 minutes

Most Effective:  At the beginning of the semester to assess levels of student anxiety about various communication contexts.

Students can complete the PRCA-24 questionnaire and compute their own score, or you can compute it for them.

You can share the purpose of it with them after administering it and share their scores with them, if you think it would be helpful.

OR

You can choose to not share the purpose and their scores with them and simply use the knowledge to refer students with exceptionally high levels of anxiety to campus resources for assistance.

Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA)

Time Required:  About 15-20 minutes

Most Effective:  At the beginning of the semester to assess levels of student anxiety about public speaking.

Students can complete the PRPSA questionnaire and compute their own score, or you can compute it for them.

You can share the purpose of it with them after administering it and share their scores with them, if you think it would be helpful.

OR

You can choose to not share the purpose and their scores with them but use the knowledge to refer students with exceptionally high levels of public speaking anxiety to campus resources.

LISTENING ACTIVITY

Time Required:  About 15-20 minutes

Most Effective:  Before students attend the Workshop or you teach them about the parts of the speech outline structure.

Students experience for themselves how difficult listening is and how much easier a speaker can make it for the audience if he or she uses the parts of a speech effectively.

They will experience the impact of logically organized main points, transitions, signposts, and repeating the same key words at critical junctures in the speech structure.
