Institutional Structure of Federal and Lower Authorities of Government in Belgium

Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy. Decision making is divided into different sections of government. There is the overarching federal government where the king is the head of state and the prime minister is the head of government. The king of Belgium has limited power, but he appoints the prime minister and other ministers. These people are responsible for running the government. Then there are governments for each language-based community, German, French, and Flemish, and then there are governments for each region, Brussels (the capital), Flanders (the Flemish region), and Wallonia. These governments are legally all equal, but they have different responsibilities and powers. There are then communities and provinces, which are supervised by one of the three governments, federal, community, or region.
Belgium has been a part of the European Union since 1958.

The current king is Phillipe of Belgium. The current prime minister is Bart De Wever.
