Choosing "Reputable Sources"

You may choose to use an online source found on the internet. This is appropriate, but requires you to put some additional thought into selection of your sources. Not all websites and articles are created equal. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Who is writing this content?
  • What is the authority behind this content? Does it come from the expertise of the author? The reputation of a publication or website?
  • Where is the information in this content coming from? Was there a direct interview? Do they have sources that they cite or identify? Would it be better to get information from those sources directly?
  • When was this content created? Is it up to date?

These questions will help you to choose better sources. This information will also help you when it comes time to cite your sources.

Search Tips

  • Search FoxHunt to search most of the library collections including books, newspapers, trade publications, and more.
  • Place quotation marks around your subject's first and last names to get results for that exact name without the parts of the name separated. (This works in most databases AND Google!)
  • Alongside your subjects name, include other search terms, such as advertising and biography.
    • ex. "Lee Clow" Advertising bio or "Bill Bernbach" podcast
  • Check if your subject has a LinkedIn page. This may be a source of useful information or provide links to useful sources posted by or about your subject, or indicate what agencies you can search for.
  • Visit the websites of agencies and organizations that your subject is a part of.
