What are zines?: Zines as Sources

Why citing zines matters

Any work you use in your research or studies needs to be cited, so you can give credit to the person who created the work/performed the research. Always cite your sources, including zines!

Many times it can be hard to find all the information for citing a zine, so the general idea is to find what you can and do your best.

A note on authorship

Not all zines list an author but you can attempt to locate the author by reading through the zine or looking it up online to see if it's posted digitally or cataloged online. Some people purposefully do not put their names on their zines, so if you cannot find the name on the zine, or on a digital version, do not put the name. As well, if someone uses a pseudonym, do not put their real name, even if you know it. This is important to respect people's privacy.

Evaluating zines

Because zines bring in topics of privilege and power, we recommend using the ACT UP method to evaluate them.
