Library Research Tips- Boolean Operators: Boolean Operator- AND

How to use AND in searching

  • AND narrows your result by combining search terms.
  • It tells the computer that your search must include both (or all) words you connect with AND
  • AND helps your narrow your results and focus your topic

Let's look at an example using a Venn Diagram:

What this looks like when searching

If we were to search for Whales in FoxHunt, we'd get 149,619 results on only whales.
If we were to search for Yachts in FoxHunt, we'd get 154,867 results on only yachts.

If we were to search for Whales AND Yachts in FoxHunt, we'd get 428 results, a much more narrow, focused search. The Boolean operator AND gives us terms with only whales and yachts, which helps us narrow our search greatly.
