Every year for our graduating student assistants, the Library asks the students to share their favorite books or movies with us. If we don't already own a copy, we purchase it for the Library. Every book and movie chosen will have a bookplate placed in it in honor of the graduating student assistant
Greg has a double major in Games & Emerging Media and French with a concentration in Technical Development & Programming. He started working at the library during the fall semester of his freshman year. His favorite thing about working in the library is the quiet and relaxed atmosphere that allows him to focus clearly and get a lot of work done.
Greg is legendary for the timeliness of his patron counts. You can set your watch to them!
Book Selection:
Video Game Storytelling: What Every Developer Needs to Know about Narrative Techniques by Evan Skolnick
Why Greg picked this book:
This was one of the first books that my parents got me when they heard that I was interested in making games. While I'm more programming-centered now unlike this book, which discusses narrative techniques in games, this book still inspired me to continue further with learning how to design video games and has only served to make me more passionate for games themselves. I hope students have the same opportunity to read this book and possibly be inspired to pursue game design as well.
Also check out the e-book below. Greg is one of the authors of chapter 13!
Valentina is an environmental studies major
Val balances all her outdoor research and her work in the library like a pro and has never accidentally showed up to work in her Hudson river sampling gear!
The Book of Eels: Our Enduring Fascination with the Most Mysterious Creature in the Natural World. By Patrik Svensson
About Chris
Chris started in the library as stacks maintenance but we couldn't let his excellent customer service skills go to waste so he quickly became a regular at the circulation desk!
Book Selection:
The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
Why Chris picked this book:
When I was younger, I liked to read but I didn't have a lot of books. My dad recommended I read The Lord of the Rings books since he was a huge fan of them, so I borrowed his copies and read them. These books really kick-started my love of reading and made me want to be a reader.
Victoria:
Book Selection:
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Why Victoria selected this book:
This book just makes you want to make the most of your college experience, no matter how different it is to the one the characters in the book experience.
The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, 1) by Holly Black
The Folk of the Air trilogy brought my friends and me closer together during a time when I was healing from an emotionally challenging experience at Marist. Forging a bond that may not have been possible without the shared experience of diving into the thrilling world of faeries, politics, romance, and intrigue.
