ENG120: Writing For College--Bauduy: Writing an Argumentative Paper

Getting Started

Writing an argumentative paper, or writing a paper where you take a stance, is more than just stating your opinion. Here's some tips for getting started, plus a few additional resources to check out.

To start:
1) Choose a topic---you want this to be broad enough that there'll be enough research but not too broad that the amount of research is overwhelming

2) Research! Forming an argument can take place before, during, AND after your research. Research & gathering information/sources will let you know: 1) what information is out there on this topic (this can tell you if your topic is too narrow, too broad, just right); 2) what others are saying on the topic; 3) what you think on the topic

3) Form an educated opinion---use your research to formulate your opinion
An opinion shouldn't just be how you feel but also why you feel that way

4) Write your paper and use your research to defend your opinion (what did you find that supports how you think) AND to show the other side
A strong argument includes both sides

Having trouble figuring out where you stand? Use the research & views you've found to help you think critically about the issue, & ask questions about the validity of the arguments you're reading. Do you agree or disagree with the stance? Why or why not?

A strong argument needs evidence
